Travelling with Pets

Going on a holiday is always fun and taking your pets is even better......

Packing the family up to go on a trip to get some much-needed R and R from our busy lives is a great way to unwind and spend time with your loved ones.

However, taking our Pets adds another dimension to the world of travel!

Now travelling with animals can be fun, it can also add an extra level of stress. There are certain things to take into consideration if you are wanting to take your pooch, or any pet for that matter be-it a Pet Rabbit, Pet Cat, Pet Chicken or even your Horse, with you:

1.  Is the location of your holiday a safe place to bring your Pet?

  • When you go on holiday, there are many pet friendly options (such as a pet friendly Air bnb). It is important though to make sure that whatever you decide, that your pet will be safe.
  • Focus on checking your surroundings before letting your dog off leash. It is always advised to go for a walk around the property and check to see if there is anything that could pose a risk to your puppy.
  • If you have a different type of Pet, once again, focus on the surroundings to make sure it is safe and secure.
  • Trust that your accommodation provider is correct in stating that it is pet friendly but really double check yourself to be absolutely certain......
  • Ensure the place is secure.  Not just safe......

2.  What activities are you planning on doing on your holiday?

  • If you are wanting to spend a lot of time sight seeing or going to restaurants etc. Then taking your pet is probably not the best thing to do.
  • One of the main reasons to take your furry friend is to create awesome memories with them. If you are going to be leaving them alone for long periods of time, then that isn’t much fun for them (especially because they won’t be in a familiar place).
  • Therefore, think about your activities before you take your pet on a road trip and then ensure your schedule is inclusive of them.....  Otherwise, what's the point???

3.  Make sure their microchip, registrations, and contact details are up to date.

  • As stated in point 2, because your pet won’t be in a familiar place, there is the possibility that they will get confused and go for a stroll by themselves.
  • To ensure they are returned to you and aren’t lost wandering around, it is vital to make sure that all your information on your dog’s microchip is current, as well as have a name tag with your contact information on a secured collar.
  • This also goes for other types of pets like cats etc....  Make sure they have the appropriate registrations up-to-date plus some sort of tag clearly showing your contact details.
  • Double check your pet insurance is up-to-date as well.....  If you did have an unfortunate incident you want to be relaxed in knowing you will be able to afford to get your Fur baby fixed up good as new!!!

4.  Plan your travel times well.

  • Your pets won't like to be in the car for as long as you do....  Therefore make sure you are prepared to stop regularly, and let them out to stretch their legs and have a drink.
  • This means taking water for them, and a bowl, or container, for them to drink out of.
  • Also, your pets are similar to you......  they will need a toilet break.....  Make sure you take the all important tidy bags with you to leave the place you stop as clean as when you got there.
  • Then you need to check your travel attitude and me prepared for the trip to take just a little bit longer than you would normally plan.....  then your stress levels will be in-check as well....

Remember, the adventure in getting there is also a part of your holiday.....  so being prepared will make it more enjoyable!!!
