Wet Weather and Your Dogs......5 Things To Consider.

Australia is an amazing place for us as well as for our pets.  One minute hot and dry, the next incredibly wet!!!  We love it and wouldn't have it any other way however weather extremes can challenge our dogs, and pets, so we need to be good pet parents to ensure they stay comfortable and relaxed.

With rain comes an array of issues.....

Some good, some bad, which need to be taken into consideration to ensure that your dog, or any pet for that matter, enjoy the cooler weather.

The obvious issue with rain, is that it is wet......

Thus, to stay dry, there comes a lot more indoor time. No one really wants to play outside in the rain for a long period of time.  The novelty is great but that wears off fairly quickly and then everyone want to get warm and dry!

Indoor activities can be fun, but ultimately can be pretty boring for dogs.

Make sure you have some fun enrichment activities planned. A favourite with dogs is the use of enrichment food toys which tend to have Pet Treats stacked in them. If you do this, make sure to pack them full of delicious Huds and Toke dog treats... it entertains them for hours.

Another simply enrichment toy is filling the tip of a Cow Hoof with some peanut butter.....  They will sit with it for ages trying to lick out the Peanut Butter and biting into the hoof....

The only issue here is that you need to have a place for them to chew on such a treat....  Being all natural, it can get a bit funky inside.... so have a place in the laundry or on the veranda out of the rain....

If your dog does go outside and gets wet, make sure you dry them off and check them over for any nasties, like ticks or leaches.....

Another nasty to look for are fleas. Fleas love wet weather, so to be sure to keep your dogs flea and worm treatment up to date (especially in wet conditions).

Be sure you are still playing with your dog and giving them some sort of exercise, even when it is pouring outside.

Wet and gloomy weather seems like the perfect opportunity to curl up with your dog on the couch and watch a movie (and trust me, they will love that as well), but it is also important that they are getting the required exercise to keep them fit, especially if the rain is sticking around for a long time.

That's where you just have to toughen up, put the lead on them, put on some wet weather clothes, and go for a walk in the rain.....

It's actually quite liberating when you realise it's only water and you go for a solid walk outside.....  Just think ahead and make sure that you both have a dry towel ready at the door for when you get home.....  Whilst you can take a warm shower, it's better to make sure your dry your puppy very well....

Also, keep an eye on the diet....  If you are in for a week or two of wet weather which will involve a lot of inside time, make sure you adjust your pets diet appropriately as they will not be expending the same amount of energy as per normal.

So, in summary take note of these things

  1. Rain is wet....  So keep your pets dry!!!
  2. Being indoors can get boring....  So use some Dog Treats to help with this.
  3. Check for Fleas, Ticks and other nasties if they have been for a frolick outside!
  4. Dry them properly if you do play outside with your puppies.
  5. Keep and eye on their diet!
