A dog costume should be fun for you and comfortable for your dog. The best ones are easy to put on, leave your dog free to move, see and breathe, and come off the moment your dog has had enough. Get the fit and the temperament right and you get the photo. Get it wrong and you get a sulk, so a little planning goes a long way.
Choosing a costume your dog will actually wear
- Fit before flair. Measure your dog and check it does not pull at the legs, neck or tail. Bandanas, hats and bow ties suit dogs who dislike full outfits.
- Read your dog. Lip-licking, a tucked tail, freezing or trying to back out all say "too much." A bandana or a single accessory is plenty for most dogs.
- Keep it short and rewarded. Pair dress-up with treats and praise, take your photos, then take it off. Costumes are for moments, not all day.
Always supervise: A costume should never be left on an unsupervised dog, and never restrict sight, breathing, hearing or movement. When in doubt, less is more.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my dog is comfortable in a costume?
A comfortable dog moves freely and stays relaxed. Lip-licking, a tucked tail, freezing or trying to escape mean it is time to take it off. Start with a bandana if you are unsure.
What size costume does my dog need?
Measure your dog's neck, chest and length and compare against the product sizing. When in doubt, size up, and choose an adjustable accessory.
How long should my dog wear a costume?
Only as long as the photo or the moment takes, with supervision throughout. Costumes are not for all-day or unsupervised wear.
What if my dog hates dressing up?
Plenty of dogs do. A festive bandana or bow tie gives you the look with almost nothing to tolerate.
